The Story of Kate Moss

Kate Moss was born on January 16 in 1974 in Croydon, Greater London. At the age of 14 Moss was discovered by Sarah Doukas (founder of Storm Model Management). Her career in modeling began in 1990 as she posed for black-and-white photographs for the British magazine, The Face. The pictures were taken by Corinne Day who titled the shoot as The 3rd Summer of Love. At the age of 18 Moss featured in the fashion look heroin chic (which prompted speculation over her weight) with a campaign for Calvin Klein. She was part of the advertisement campaign for the perfume, Obsession, for which she modeled with Mark Wahlberg. Kate’s super-skinny figure was a contrast to the curvy supermodels of the day (including Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell). As a result, Moss became the anti-supermodel of the 1990s and in 1995, Moss was awarded the Fashion Personality of the Year’ award.

Moss has been featured in ad campaigns with Chanel, Balenciaga, Burberry, Stuart Weitzman, Versace, Rag and Bone, Alexander Wang, David Yurman, Givenchy,Roberto Cavalli, Kerastase, Isabel Marant, Yves Saint Laurent, Dior, Gucci,Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen, Bulgari and Rimmel. Also over the years, she has appeared in a number of prestigious and well known fashion magazines including Vogue, W, Another Man, Vanity Fair and The Face.

In 1999 she appeared in the short film ‘Blackadder: Back & Forth’, where she played the role of ‘Maid Marian’. Refreshed and detoxed, Kate appears on the catwalk for the first time after rehab. In 2000 Kate Moss showed off creations at the Gucci Spring/Summer ready-to-wear women’s collection show in Milan. In 2003 she was featured in ‘The White Stripes’ music video titled, “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself”.

In 2005 Kate Moss was dropped from several major campaigns, including Chanel, Burberry, after a picture of her allegedly snorting cocaine was published on the front page of the Daily Mirror. The Swedish fashion retailer H&M dropped her from its campaign of autumn clothes designed by Stella McCartney. The police dropped all charges against her in June 2006, and she resumed her career. In 2005 Alexander McQueen wore a T-shirt “Kate, we love you” displaying his support for Kate Moss who was embroiled in a cocaine scandal. Artist Stella Vine, also supported Moss, and paintings by Vine, painted during the scandal, were exhibited and reproduced in the press. After 2005 Moss appeared as a model for the Rimmel London mascara and became the face of Dior new perfume Dior Addict. Later in 2005 she received the Fashion Icon award, which was conferred upon her by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Moss has been the subject of portraits by artists such as Lucian Freud and Chuck Close. In 2005, a painting of Moss by Freud sold for £3.93million at Christie’s. The National Portrait Gallery, London maintains seven portraits of Moss among its collections, shot by photographers including Mario Testino, Corinne Day and Solve Sundsb. An 18 carat gold statue of Moss in 2008 was part of a British Museum exhibition. The statue was made by Marc Quinn, who described Moss as “the ideal beauty of the moment”. The statue is said to be the largest gold statue to be created since the era of Ancient Egypt.

In 2007 Moss released her own collection in collaboration with Katy England for Topshop. Late she collaborated with Coty and they launched a line of body lotions and fragrances. This year she also was bestowed upon the Sexiest Woman NME Award. (She has been enlisted in the ‘Sexiest Woman List’ by various magazines).In 2010 Moss collaborated with Longchamp, a French luxury leather goods company in order to design a unique collection of handbags. She had previously been part of their campaigns for over eight seasons. In 2011 she served as the brand ambassador and face of the Spanish fashion retailer, Mango. Kate Moss presented a creation by Marc Jacobs as part of his Autumn-Winter 2011/2012 women’s ready-to-wear fashion collection for Louis Vuitton during Paris Fashion Week. In 2012 she appeared in George Michael’s video for the song titled, White Light. The same year she also performed at the 2012 Olympic Games along with Naomi Campbell. She was Brand Supremes’ model for its 2012 spring/summer collection. In 2013, she posed with singer Rihanna for a cover shoot for the V magazine. In 2013, Moss turned her focus onto technology-focused accessories, creating fashion tech collaboration with Carphone Warehouse. Later in 2013 Moss posed nude for the 60th-anniversary issue of Playboy. The start of 2014 saw Moss become the new face of the latest Alexander McQueen campaign.

Besides being one of the world’s leading models, Moss has also become famous for her tumultuous personal life .Kate Moss has a daughter, Lila Grace Moss-Hack, born in 2002, with Dazed & Confused editor Jefferson Hack, with whom she was in a relationship for a number of years in the early 2000’s. In 1990’s Moss has been engaged to actor Johnny Depp. In 2005 Moss had a relationship with Pete Doherty. On 11 April 2007, Doherty announced Moss as his fiancée during one of his concerts in London, at which Moss also performed. In July 2007, Moss and Doherty split. After, in 2011, Moss married Jamie Hince (guitarist of The Kills) in Gloucestershire.

Moss supports the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity and in 2007 designed a charm necklace in support of the Cancer Research in the United Kingdom. She has given her support to various other charity organizations like the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Make Poverty History, Comic Relief and Homes of Hope, the Hoping Foundation, and the Lucie Blackman Trust.
