Alessandra Ambrosio is a Brazilian model. Ambrosio is best known for her work with Victoria’s Secret and was chosen as the first spokes-model for the company’s “PINK” line. Ambrosio is currently one of the Victoria’s Secret Angels and has modeled for brands such as Next, Armani Exchange, Christian Dior, and Ralph Lauren.
Alessandra Ambrosio was born on April 11, 1981, in the Brazilian town of Erichim, Rio Grande do Sul. Her parents, gas station owners, were of Polish and Italian descent. Ambrosio was just eight years old when she decided that she wanted to be a model, after seeing a picture of top cover-girl Karen Mulder in a magazine: “I wanted to be like her”, she recalls. She enrolled at a modeling class at the age of 12 and at the age of 14 she was one of 20 finalists for an elite modeling competition in Brazil.
At the age of 15, she debuted in modeling for Dilson Stein, credited for the discovery of world renowned models – Gisele Bundchen and Caroline Trentini. Her modeling job took the right path when she appeared on the cover page of Brazilian Elle magazine. In 1998 she was featured on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar and in 1999 appeared in CK Jeans ad campaign. In September 1999 she walked the Spring Fendi, Balmain, Christian Lacroix, and Kenzo shows in Milan and Paris. In 2000 she was chosen as the new face of Guess for its ‘Fall 2000 Millennium’ Campaign. In 2001, Ambrosio became the face of Oscar de la Renta. She has since worked with such brands as Revlon, Christian Dior, Giorgio Armani, Rolex, Oscar de la Renta, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Next, Kenzo, Gucci, Escada, Loewe, Rocco Barocco, Escada, Moschino, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, as well as the Pirelli Calendar. She has ramp-walked for various high-profile designers, such as Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs, Kenzo, Vivienne Westwood, and Giles Deacon. Alessandra Ambrosio has featured as a cover model in numerous fashion magazines, such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Ocean Drive, Lui, Wiener, Self, GQ, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Flair, Vanity Fair, Russh, Marie Claire, Numero, and Grazia. She has appeared in a variety of high-end editorials, which include Ocean Drive, Vogue, Glamour, Love, W, Lui France, V, Harper’s Bazaar, S Moda for El Pais, and Interview.
Ambrosio’s best-known collaboration is with the famous lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret. She appeared in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show for the first time in 2000. By 2004, she was selected as the first spokes-model for the Victoria’s Secret “PINK” line and became a contracted “Angel.” In 2005, she walked the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway wearing lingerie made entirely out of candy. In November 2007, the Victoria’s Secret Angels, including Alessandra Ambrosio, received a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the 2008 Fashion Show Ambrosio walked the runway only three months after giving birth to her first child and opened the show the following year. In 2011, she walked the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, flaunting the heaviest wings ever, at a staggering 30 lbs., despite being pregnant with her second baby. In 2012 She modeled the $2.5 million gem-studded ‘fantasy bra’ – ‘Floral Fantasy Bra’ at the Victoria’s Secret runway, encrusted with 5,200 precious stones, including a 20-carat white diamond centerpiece, designed by London Jewelers.
In 2004 she launched her own swimwear line, Alessandra Ambrosio by Sais, as a division of Rosa Cha, and was well received with 10,000 units being sold in its first month. In 2009, she featured on the cover of Marie Claire’s July edition, along with Sacha Baron Cohen to promote his film ‘Bruno’. She appeared in an ad campaign with American model-cum-actor Ashton Kutcher for Brazilian sportswear company, Colcci, in its Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Thereafter she would go on to become the face of the brand. She later introduced her own fashion and lifestyle brand, Ale by Alessandra, partnered with US retailer Cherokee, offering a range of women’s formal wear for age group 18-25 years.
In 2006, she made her debut on the silver screen with the hit James Bond film ‘Casino Royale’, embodying the role of a tennis player. She has made special appearances on the television in ‘Entourage’, ‘Late Night with Conan O’Brien’, and ‘The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn’, apart from being a guest judge on ‘The Tyra Banks Show’ and ‘Project Runway’. She acted in ‘The Yips’ episode of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ drama series in 2007, along with her fellow Victoria’s Secret Angels – Miranda Kerr, Adriana Lima, Marisa Miller, Heidi Klum and Selita Ebanks. She has also been a host on awards shows, like The MTV Music Awards and Fashion Rocks.
In 2007 she became the face of A/X Armani Exchange. That same year she was ranked #5 in FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World poll. In 2007 Maxim magazine listed her number 51 on its “Hot 100 people”. In April 2007 she was named by People magazine as one of the 100 Most Beautiful People in the World. 2010 saw Ambrosio close the Fall Giles show in Paris, also walks for Prada and Louis Vuitton. In September 2010 she walked the spring Marc Jacobs and Dolce & Gabbana shows in New York and Milan. The same year she became the face Moschino. In 2010, she was ranked at #5 on the Forbes’ list of ‘The World’s Top-Earning Models, with an estimated revenue of $5 million that year, which was later updated to #6 in 2012 with annual earnings of $6.6 million. In 2011 she became the face of Dolce & Gabbana and in 2012 she appeared in Spring Love Editorial, photographed by Daniel Jackson, and modeled for the Hugo Boss Orange Spring ad campaign.
In 2001 she started to date fellow model Marcelo Boldrini. However, her busy schedule and rapid success came in between their relationship, which resulted in their break-up in 2005. She met California-based businessman, Jamie Mazur, in late 2005 and chose to keep the relationship behind the closet. In 2008 the couple got engaged. The couple has two children – daughter Anja Louise Ambrosio Mazur born in 2008 and son Noah Phoenix Ambrosio Mazur born in 2012. To stay in shape, she exercises with a Brazilian trainer doing a unique exercise, a mixture of samba and capoeira aerobics. Alessandra is also the ambassador for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, involved with offering help to the needy, through public announcements and using her name and image.
