Adriana Lima is a Brazilian model and actress, best known as a Victoria’s Secret Angel since 2000 (being their longest-running model), as a spokesperson/model for Maybelline cosmetics from 2003 to 2009 and for her Super Bowl and Kia Motors commercials.
Adriana was born on June 12 in 1981 in Salvador, a town in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Lima’s native language is Portuguese, but she speaks English, French and Italian as well. Characterizing her religious roots, she is known for taking a Bible with her and attending church every Sunday. Lima never thought about being a model, although she had won many beauty pageants in elementary school. At the age of 16 Lima received second place in Ford’s “Supermodel of the World” competition. In 1999, at the age of her 17, Lima moved to New York and signed the contract with Elite Model Management. Over the years, her modeling portfolio quickly began to expand and she appeared in international editions of Vogue, Bazaar, ELLE, GQ, Arena, Cosmopolitan, Esquire and others. She walked as a runway model for designers like Vera Wang, Christian Lacroix, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, and Valentino and among others. In 2000 Lima became a GUESS girl and featured in many ad campaigns for the brand. By 2003 Lima was ranked 57th in Maxim’s Hot 100 and later, in 2004, would be ranked 1st on Askmen.com as the Most Desirable Women. Moreover, she was named first leaving behind stars like Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Monica Bellucci and Charlize Theron. In 2011 she was ranked 14th in the 2011 FHM list of “100 Sexiest Women in the World”. Following that in 2012 she became the face of Donna Karan, and in 2015 the face of Marc Jacob’s fragrance ‘Decadence’ as well as Vogue Eyewear. In 2012, Lima was ranked in 4th place on the Forbes top-earning models list, estimated to have earned $7.3 million in one year. In 2014 she came in second place with earnings of $8 million. Adriana attended the closing ceremony of 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and was one of the few people to touch the World Cup trophy (only FIFA World Cup champions and heads of state are allowed to touch the trophy). In 2015, it was announced that Adriana would have her own wax figure at the Madame Tussauds Museum in New York. She is the first Victoria’s Secret Angel and the second Brazilian figure to join the museum.
Adriana is best known for her work with the brand Victoria’s Secret. Lima is considered as a “grandma” of the Angels – joining Alessandra Ambrosio as the longest-serving Angel, having both walked in a staggering 13 shows. She had her first fashion show for the company in 1999 and got contracted as an Angel in 2000. She was also on several television ads for the brand, including the praised a criticized “Angel in Venice” commercial of 2003 with Bob Dylan and her solo Victoria’s Secret Super Bowl XLII ad (the most-seen ad of the game). In 2008 she hosted the “What is Sexy?” program for the Entertainment Network. Lima was also featured in November’s Miracle Bra relaunch. She wore the “Fantasy Bra” for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2008 (“The Black Diamond” – $5 million) & 2010 (“The Bombshell” – $2 million) & 2014 (“The Dream Angels” – $2 million). Furthermore, in 2009, Lima launched the company’s new makeup line, “Christian Siriano for VS Makeup”.
Lima’s first acting role was as the wife, alongside Mickey Rourke and Forest Whitaker, in The Follow (2001), a short film in the BMW series The Hire, starring Clive Owen and directed by Wong Kar-wa. In 2007 she appeared with her fellow Angels in a guest spot playing herself in the series How I Met Your Mother. 2008 saw Lima appear on the American television series Ugly Betty, where she played herself and made friends with the series’ title character, played by America Ferrera. In 2013, she appeared on the series “The Crazy Ones” episode Models Love Magic, where she played herself and wore the Royal Fantasy Bra.
Adriana Lima does charitable work helping with an orphanage, “Caminhos da Luz” (Ways of Light), located in her hometown. She helps with construction to expand the orphanage, and buys clothes for poor children in Salvador, Bahia. She appeared on Var mısın Yok musun, the Turkish version of Deal or No Deal, where her prize money went to a hospital in Istanbul for children fighting leukemia. To stay fit, Adriana sticks to the jump-rope and shadow boxing. In 2012 her diet became one of the top five diets searched on Google. She also paints watercolor canvases in her spare time and is secretly obsessed with frozen grapes and Brazilian soap operas.
In her youth she was very shy around boys and that’s why she only received her first kiss when she was about 17 years old. After that, she went to her mother, to ask if she could marry him. In 2006, she told GQ magazine, that she was a virgin for a long time and explained: “Sex is for after marriage. The men have to respect that, this is my choice. If there’s no respect, that means they don’t want me.” In 2001, she began a love affair with singer and rock legend Lenny Kravitz. The couple were engaged in 2002, but less than a year later, the engagement was called off. After her separation with her previous boyfriend, she remained single for about five years and only started dating again in 2007 when she started going out with boyfriend, Serbian NBA player Marko Jaric. After nine months of dating, they finally got engaged in June 2008. On Valentine’s Day 2009 they tied the knot. Lima became mother for the first time in 2009. She gave birth to her 1st child when she was 28, a daughter Valentina Lima Jaric. She was the first pregnant woman who appeared in the legendary Pirelli’s Calendar Once again in 2012, she became the mother of her second daughter, a daughter Sienna Lima Jaric. In 2014, Lima and Jaric announced their separation after five years of marriage.
